Franzoni, Conde Join M1 Racing

DALLAS, May 1 — M1 Racing is pleased to announce that Victor Franzoni and Carlos Conde have joined its team in the Pro Mazda Championship presented by Cooper Tires, effective immediately.

They will join Expert class driver Jay Horak of Mesa, Ariz., in the series’ tripleheader on the 2.439-mile, 14-turn road course at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway May 7-9.

Franzoni, 19, is stepping up from the USF2000 series, where he is currently fifth in the point standings. The native of Sao Paulo, Brazil won the USF2000 race April 12 at NOLA Motorsports Park, and he finished second in a similar event April 24 at Barber Motorsports Park. He also finished second in the pre-season Cooper Tires Winterfest with two victories and a second, missing the title by a mere five points.

Last year he placed fifth in the USF2000 championship as a rookie, winning at St. Petersburg, Fla.  He also posted podium finishes at Barber, Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, on the road course at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

He competed in Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup in 2013, and he had great success in karting before he advanced to formula car racing. He started karting at the age of 4. He speaks four languages (Portuguese, Italian, English and Spanish), and his goal is to be an IndyCar driver.

Franzoni’s effort is being sponsored in part by AutoEnginuity, the world’s leading provider of PC/PDA-based scan tools used for diagnostics. Horak is that company’s chief executive officer.

“Victor is what a sponsor hopes to find to showcase their products — a top-tier driver who is well mannered and professional,” Horak said. “What he strives for in his racing career, we do in our products. We are a great fit. I think this is just the beginning of what should be a long relationship. We are very excited to be part of his path to the top.”

“When Jay approached me about running Victor, I was very excited,” said Paul Mata, owner of M1 Racing. “I’m well aware of his accomplishments in USF2000 and in Europe, and I expect great things from him in Pro Mazda.”

“I’m very excited to join M1 Racing,” Franzoni said. “It will be my first time in a Pro Mazda car. I’m confident that M1 will give me a good car, and I’m very excited to see what happens when we get to Indy!”

Franzoni finished third in one of the USF2000 races on the IMS road course last year.

In addition to AutoEnginuity, Franzoni’s Pro Mazda car will be sponsored by Novac Sports.

Conde, of Scarsdale, N.Y., joins Horak in the Expert class. Although he’s driven in Pro Mazda races with M1 Racing in the past, the IMS tripleheader will be his first race in the series this year. His main focus this season is IMSA’s North American Ferrari Challenge series, where he is leading the Trofeo Pirelli AM point standings. He won that class in the series’ most recent race too, as he was victorious April 26 at Sonoma Raceway.

“I intend to do a few Pro Mazda races, but it’s still to be determined how many,” Conde said. “I will do IMS for sure.”

IMS was scheduled as a doubleheader for the Pro Mazda series but there will actually be three Pro Mazda races at IMS this year. After two test sessions on Wednesday, May 6 (10:15 a.m. and 3:15 p.m.) and two practice sessions on Thursday, May 7 (9:15 a.m. and 2:15 p.m.), the 35-minute race that was rained out at NOLA will be held at 5:55 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, according to the series’ Web site at promazdaseries.com.

Qualifying for the regular races planned for IMS will be held at 10:15 a.m. on Friday, May 8, with the second race (45 minutes) following that afternoon at 2 p.m. The third race (40 minutes) will be held at 12:15 p.m. Saturday, May 9. All times are Eastern.

M1 Racing will post updates on its Facebook page and its Twitter account.

The series’ Web site will have live timing and scoring.

FRANZONI WINS USF2000 IN NEW ORLEANS FOR AFTERBURNER AUTOSPORT

Brazilian tops field in challenging wet weather main event

NEW ORLEANS, La – In motorsports, they say that rain is the ‘great equalizer’ and that true talent comes to the forefront when wet weather puts the emphasis directly on the driver. Afterburner Autosport’s Victor Franzoni once again proved his immense talent in Sunday’s running of the fourth round of the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda at NOLA Motorsports Park. The Brazilian started on the off-pole for the second event of the doubleheader, thanks to posting a fast time in Saturday’s opening race, in which is he finished a strong fourth. In Sunday’s wet race, Franzoni took the lead early in the 20-minute event and masterfully handled the challenging conditions to score his first win of the year.

“This is an incredible way to end the weekend, because our team put in a ton of hours at this event to give Victor the best car we could,” offered Tim Walsh, Afterburner Autosport Team Principal. “We swapped cars, changed motors, and went back and forth between wet and dry set-ups.  Saturday’s top-five was good, but Sunday’s win in the rain was very satisfying. Our goal will be to take this victory and ride the momentum through to Barber in two weeks.”

As stated, it was a long weekend for the Afterburner crew, who elected to move Victor to their #14 car after the Thursday promoters test day.  In the new car, which was re-badged with his #17 decal, Franzoni was strong from the onset of the weekend, running the second quickest times in both of Friday’s practice sessions.  In Saturday morning qualifying stint, the team elected to use just a single set of new sticker Cooper tires to save fresh rubber for the races as Victor would lay down a 1:38.992 that put him sixth on the grid for Race 1.  In that 30-minute race, Franzoni was ultra-quick and advanced to fourth, although he was unable to close on the lead trio and finished in that position.  In the process of his fourth place run, he turned in the second quickest lap of the race to secure a front row starting position for Race 2 on Sunday morning. Following the race, the team went over the data and elected to make an engine change, which the team took care of into the late evening.

The rains that affected the start of Sunday’s IndyCar race began early in the morning, and the USF2000 drivers hit the track at 8:30 a.m. for a shortened 20-minute race.  In full wet conditions, Franzoni settled into second on the opening lap and then went into attack mode to takeover the point.  On lap three, he slipped inside Aaron Telitz to assume the lead and would go on to a 1.015-second triumph.  Victor was challenged aggressively by Saturday winner Nico Jamin in the late-going, but the Brazilian was too much for Jamin and cruised over the final corners to his first win of the year.

The team will now tear down their cars in preparation for the next event on the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda circuit, which will take place at Barber Motorsports Park on April 24-26.  Afterburner has two race-ready cars available for the remainder of the 2015 season, if any interested drivers would like to team with a USF2000 race winner like Victor Franzoni on a race-winning squad. These cars are prepped and ready to race for drivers looking to gain experience in the USF2000 program, whether it be through a focused testing program and in official series action. Drivers interested in these seats should contact Tim Walsh directly.

Race #1: 4th

Race #2: 1st

Driver Quote: “The weekend was very difficult, but in the end, we got what we needed. We started the weekend changing the car, because we had a problem in the primary car that I was running. After I finished Race 1 in 4th place, Afterburner and I decided to change the motor for the Race 2. I’m so happy that we did.  I had everything perfect – the good car, the motor and the weather that I love, rain. Now we are ready for Barber. I think we´ll do a great job there and get closer in the points.”

Series sophomore enters 2015 with race wins, podiums and team chemistry

MINNEAPOLIS, MIN. (January 23, 2015) – After a debut season that saw the squad score a major race win, four podiums and take fifth overall in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda driver standings, Afterburner Autosport is pleased to announce the return of Brazilian standout Victor Franzoni to the tent for the 2015 season. The 19-year-old will tackle his second season on the opening rung of the Mazda Road to Indy, armed with new confidence and significant race experience. With a year under his belt, one that featured impressive success, Franzoni will certainly be a driver to watch in 2015.

“We’re thrilled to have Victor back with us for the new year and I think that his return speaks to the fact that our team developed steadily throughout last year’s campaign,” offered Tim Walsh, Afterburner Autosport Team Principal. “Victor got us our first USF2000 win and he was in the hunt all year, as a rookie. Coming back for his sophomore season, we all have exciting expectations for taking a run at the championship.”

Franzoni will work with noted IndyCar and open wheel formula car engineer Stefan Dwornick, who joined Afterburner Autosport midway through the 2014 season. As part of the Mazda Road to Indy, the USF2000 series pushes young drivers up a steep learning curve and Franzoni adapted quickly and became one of the most impressive rookies in the program last year. He will enter the new season with great optimism and high expectations.

“I’m very excited to start the season,” admitted Franzoni. “Last year was very good for me and now that I know the tracks, this will help me a lot during the race weekends. Racing with Afterburner once again is a pleasure for me, as we have a very good relationship and I am assured knowing that they are working hard to prepare for the new season, so this makes me very happy and confident for 2015.”

Franzoni showed great adaptability from the get-go in 2014, finishing on the podium at all three of the track configurations offered on the USF2000 schedule. Victor was victorious in the opening round of the calendar on the concrete-lined temporary street circuit of St. Petersburg, and then followed this up with podiums on the natural flowing road course at Barber Motorsports Park and the banked 5/8-mile oval at Lucas Oil Raceway. He also found the podium on the road courses at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Mid-Ohio Sport Car Course. His adaptability will serve him well in 2015, armed with new knowledge and a baseline of comfort.

The opening three rounds of the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda ‘off-season’ Cooper Tires Winterfest Series will begin on February 19-20 at NOLA Motorsports Park in New Orleans, but ahead of that outing, Afterburner will be at Palm Beach International Raceway on Sunday, January 25 and at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Wednesday, January 29 for official series tests. Franzoni will return to the team’s paddock to begin work on the new season. The likeable Brazilian will be joined by two young kart racers who were awarded USF2000 tests through the Mazda Road to Indy / MaxSpeed Driver Advancement Program. Florida’s Oliver Askew and California’s Christian Brooks will each spend time behind the wheel of an Afterburner USF2000 car to get a feel for the program.

Hoje haverá a corrida 1 e amanha a corrida 2. Os horarios abaixo são os de Brasilia:

09/05 – Race 1 – 16:30Hs

10/05 – Race 2 – 12:00Hs (meio-dia)

Brasileiro Victor Franzoni vence na abertura da USF2000

u1

O outro brasileiro, Felipe Donato, teve problemas no começo e abandonou.
